In the ever changing world of business, it is important to try and stay up to date with current trends in the industry. This is especially true when it comes to hiring new people to be a part of your company. You want to make sure you are using the most practised, ethical, and effective hiring processes you possibly can. This can keep your business on the cutting edge and will help you to recruit the best of the best. So, what fixes should you make? We have a few easy ones to help you out!

1. Ask good questions

Asking a good question can change the entire interview. You of course want to get to know the candidate’s working history, but another important factor in hiring someone is their personality and their nature. From a classic interview, it is harder to get a good read on those two things.

We suggest coming up with a series of good icebreaker questions that will help you to see a different side of the applicant. The way that they answer can tell you so much about who they are, what type of worker they will be, and how they will get along with their potential coworkers.

2. Actually call their references

If you take the time to ask them to list references and they do, then you should actually call them. It will help you get a better understanding of who the applicant is and what they can offer you and your business.

3. Do things properly

You of course want to follow any and all rules when it comes to hiring someone. But there are a few things we may forget about during the process. The Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act protects applicants when it comes to consumer reports, aka background checks.

By being FCRA compliant, you will keep you and your company out of major trouble. You want to make sure you aren’t ignoring any laws (even accidentally), or else you will expose the company too expensive and time-consuming lawsuits.

4. Keep it real

Going through the hiring process can be torturous for all parties. It is best to keep the honesty alive and the integrity of the process flow. You can do this by making sure you are keeping it real with the applicants. Be truthful when it comes to if they are qualified, what you like about them, or what you think they could improve upon to be more successful within your company.

5. Give them time to shine

Improve Your Hiring Process (2)

Normally there is the time at the end of the interview for the applicant to ask you questions. We recommend opening up this time to let them ask questions or tell you anything they didn’t get to talk about during the interview. Give them the time and space to shine. You may be surprised what they want to share and what they will come up with!

6. ways a follow-up

The best part of the hiring process is getting to make the call that they got the job! But something that is equally as important is letting someone know that they didn’t get the job. It isn’t an easy call to make, but it is one that will help them get back out there and try again.

The only thing worse than getting that call is sitting there wondering what you did wrong, how long it will be until you hear back, or never receiving any follow-up information at all. Make sure that you let the applicant maintain their sense of pride back and give them the call either way.

Each hiring process is different, so don’t be afraid to adapt and morph these fixes into something that will help your process in particular! Good luck and happy hiring!
