Oda also answered this question by providing a code that connects current world technology.
“The enemy that must be defeated now is the strongest man in the world, the world is also transitioning from 4G to 5G, “G” means “Gear”, right?” said Oda, quoted from the Reddit site.
Five volumes later, Oda introduced Gear 5 to fans and confirmed it directly on SBS 103.
2. Inspired by Tom and Jerry

Oda explained that when drawing One Piece Luffy’s Gear 5, he wanted a fight that wasn’t too serious. Because of this, many scenes are similar to cartoon effects.
“I humorously drew Gear 5 because I knew readers would be sick of it, to be honest, I hate serious combat.
“I don’t want my manga to be too serious so I like drawing it during his battle with Kaido,” said Oda, quoted from Instagram @ oploverzz.
It doesn’t stop there, Luffy and Kaido’s battle was inspired by the Tom and Jerry cartoon, and Oda likes Luffy’s silly and sad figure.
“When I drew Gear 5 like Tom and Jerry, it was very difficult. The world of Tom and Jerry works because of the two characters themselves. But I suffered a lot because of the difference in style.
Luffy is the only one who pulls pranks, while Kaido doesn’t. I like his expression like he is running around like a wheel. “Sadly, it has been forgotten nowadays,” continued Oda.
